X-Ray

Our X-ray Department supports our clinical teams in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical problems.

Our X-ray Department is open 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday although our opening hours are flexible. This may result in shorter opening hours on one or two days a week. The entire hospital is closed at weekends and on public holidays.

The X-ray Department offers same-day support to Minor Injuries & Illness patients when our triage team need to carry out further investigation. If you know or suspect you’re pregnant, please let the team know straight away.

Your GP can request an X-ray for you by completing a referral form or sending a request electronically from their practice. Once they have made the request you can call the department on 01666 501771 to book a convenient appointment time and we will send you a confirmation letter.

Your safety and wellbeing are always our priority and be assured, all benefits and risks will be considered carefully before you are sent for an X-ray. Please talk to your doctor or radiographer if you have any questions or concerns.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

You can eat and drink normally and you should continue taking your medication as usual.

If you suspect or find out you are pregnant prior to your appointment, please call the department to discuss it straight away as X-rays are not usually recommended during pregnancy. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid wearing jewellery or anything containing metal as you may be asked to remove it by the radiographer.

What will happen on arrival?

Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment time and check in with one of our friendly reception team, who will direct you to the X-ray Department.

What will happen during my appointment?

You will be asked to lie on a table or stand against a flat surface so the part of your body being filmed can be positioned for the X-ray. The radiographer will go behind a screen and ask you to stay as still as you can (to avoid blurry images). They may take more than one image from different angles to provide as much information as possible.
