Mr Dean treats NHS and private patients at Tetbury Hospital Trust.
He is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with over 23 years’ experience in eye care; he has performed over 11,000 eye surgeries and is a global expert in cataract surgery. He completed his basic medical training at the University of Leicester graduating in 1999, and eye specialist training at the Severn Deanery. Mr Dean attained a master’s in surgical education (MEd) with merit from Imperial College London and is the first ophthalmologist to be awarded a master’s and PhD in surgical education. He is heavily involved in teaching trainee ophthalmologists, nurses, optometrists and medical students within the NHS. He has trained more than 300 future eye surgeons in cataract and glaucoma surgery from 30 countries around the world.
He specialises in cataract surgery (including advanced and complex cataract cases, and premium intra-ocular lenses), glaucoma (including laser and surgical management), and emergency eye care. He is the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Assistant Clinical Professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town where he is at the forefront of simulation surgical training. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and a Member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
He has published 40 papers in international scientific journals and a well-known textbook on eye surgery. His most recent research interests have been around surgical education, focussing on the utility of simulation training in two of the most common causes of blindness, cataract and glaucoma.
