Steve Hornby works as a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  

Originally from Liverpool, he qualified from Nottingham Medical School. He completed his basic surgical training in Lincoln, worked as a Simulation and Clinical Skills Fellow in Nottingham and completed higher surgical training throughout the Southwest of England.  

Before taking up his consultant post, he undertook an Advanced Upper GI Fellowship at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.  

His primary clinical interests include:   

  • Oesophago-gastric cancer 
  • Bariatric surgery 
  • Benign Upper GI conditions including the management of gallstone disease 
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy 
  • Hernia surgery 
  • Abdominal wall reconstruction 

He was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine for his thesis on Screening of Oesophagogastric Cancer and was a co-founder of the Severn and Peninsula Audit and Research Collaborative. 

As a keen surgical educator and has served as both President and Director of Education of the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) and was awarded Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. 

He currently holds the post of Honorary Tutor at the University of Bristol Medical School. 

Mr Hornby consults NHS and private patients at Tetbury hospital.
