Dr Mrinal Saha, MBBS MA (Cantab) FRCP PhD

Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Saha treats NHS and private patients at Tetbury Hospital Trust. He is a fully trained Consultant Cardiologist (heart specialist) based in Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals. He trained at Trinity College, Cambridge and St Bartholomew’s Hospital and St Thomas’s Hospital in London.

Dr Saha was awarded a prestigious British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship during his time at St Thomas’s, culminating in a PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine awarded by the University of London in 2010. He was appointed clinical lead of the Cardiology Department at Gloucestershire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust that same year.

Dr Saha started at Tetbury Hospital Trust in 2017, and with support and focused efforts from our Chief Executive and Matron, set up our echo scan service (echocardiogram) and cardiac rhythm monitoring service, so local patients do not have to travel to Gloucester or Cheltenham for these tests.

Dr Saha treats all aspects of adult cardiac conditions but specialises in performing coronary angiograms and coronary angioplasty (insertion of a stent). Most of these procedures are done through the radial artery in the wrist as opposed to the femoral artery in the groin.

He also specialises in the routine use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), pressure wire, Rotapro (a diamond-tipped drill to treat the inside of heart arteries) and Shockwave (a specialised ultrasound-emitting balloon that breaks up the calcium in the walls of heart arteries, also known an intravascular lithotripsy or IVL) to achieve the best results from stent insertion. He is fortunate to be able to provide private angiogram and stent procedures both in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, and in the Cleveland Clinic London.

He has numerous publications and has written book chapters in the Oxford Handbook of Cardiology and the Oxford Textbook of Interventional Cardiology. He has presented at cardiology conferences both nationally and internationally and frequently provides teaching talks to local GPs in Gloucestershire.
