Consultant Anaesthetist and Intravenous Iron infusion Service

Dr Murdoch treats private patients at Tetbury Hospital Trust. He is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals NHS Trust and is Clinical Lead for Anaesthesia at Tetbury Hospital Trust. He is the current president of the Preoperative Association since 2022.

Dr Murdoch qualified from St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Medical School (Queens Mary’s) in 2003. He completed his anaesthetic training at Bristol School of Anaesthesia in 2013 and was appointed as Consultant Anaesthetist for Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals NHS Trust in 2014 with a specialist interest in pre-operative assessment. In 2015 he established a dedicated preoperative anaemia screening and treatment service for all high-risk surgical cases. He was a member of the team who won the BMJ award for Anaesthesia and Perioperative Team of the Year 2021 and in 2022 became Specialty Director for Theatres, overseeing COVID recovery, theatre transformation and patient flow from POAC to post-op recovery.

As principal investigator for the PREVENTT study, SNAP3 and PQIP he has raised the profile of research within the pre-op assessment service. He has also chaired meetings and seminars on the effects of iron deficiency anaemia, and frequently presents on this subject. He regularly sees first-hand the impact of iron deficiency and the benefits of intravenous iron replacement, believing passionately in the effectiveness of this treatment.

Dr Murdoch has a specialist interest in peri-operative medicine and established the first dedicated intravenous iron service for NHS patients undergoing surgery in Gloucestershire, with over 10 years’ experience delivering intravenous iron therapy.

Dr Murdoch is the Principal Investigator for several research studies into the effects of intravenous iron and treatment of anaemia in patients undergoing surgery. He has chaired meetings and seminars on the effects of iron deficiency anaemia and frequently presents on this subject. He has been an invited attendee at international meetings and conferences on anaemia and iron therapies. He has also been an invited member of national advisory board meetings on perioperative anaemia management. He regularly sees first-hand the impact of iron deficiency anaemia on patients undergoing surgery as well as the benefits of intravenous iron replacement and feels passionately about the effectiveness of this treatment and its benefits.

Gloucestershire Iron Clinic is run within the outpatient department of Tetbury Hospital.
